Shayan Chowdhury

Undergraduate Research Intern

Hi there! I’m Shayan, an undergrad at Columbia University, focusing on the intersection of Computer Science and Public Health. My research focuses on developing AI tools to support healthcare and inform public policy decisions. At AIM, I have the incredible honor of working with Dr. Bitterman's team to support clinicians through AI-assisted risk assessment for diseases like cancer, towards the goal of reducing the burden on healthcare systems worldwide. At Columbia, under the Computer Science department, I also conduct research with Prof. Luis Gravano, developing machine learning techniques to spatially map illnesses across NYC for actionable policy in collaboration with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). Previously, I worked as a data analyst with Bangladesh’s Ministry of Health, analyzing COVID-19 data to inform governmental policy on lockdowns, resource allocation, and public health communications. Over the past few years, I’ve been fortunate to develop my skills in research and data science through positions at the NY Genome Center, Google, and Nobel laureate Joachim Frank's lab. I've had the honor of authoring several publications in journals such as Nature Communications on topics ranging from statistical modeling for COVID-19 policy responses to biomedical signal processing. My mission is to develop safe and ethical AI that bridges the gap between technological innovation and equitable healthcare solutions, ultimately improving accessibility and supporting evidence-based public health initiatives, especially for underserved populations. If you’re interested in any of that, feel free to reach out!
